“Ten Gemstones”

Date: 2019

Materials: hand-felted and hand-dyed raw wool panel, various fabrics

Format: 50 x 50 cm

The octagonal “stones”, often made of shiny fabrics, contrast against a muted, matt and irregular background. This contrast enhances the value of the stones and makes them even more precious – they become rubies.

A raw wool panel was felt and dyed by hand. Then, to create the “gems”, small pieces of different fabrics – matt or shiny – are sewn together using the “Garret” technique taught by Chiaki Dosho from Japan.

These rosettes are attached so that they go through the background. The octagonal quilting emphasises the octagonal shape of the gems without destroying the structure of the felt.
